On Fantabiography:
An Artist Statement

By Jim Jeffers, M.A. M.F.A

I make intermedia art and design. Confounding simple formal concerns with a labored tangle of human thoughts and interactions, I engage with the capricious natures of synchronicity, déjà vu and serendipitous phenomena; which give one hope. Expressed through a fluid performed practice, unrestricted by medial hegemony, my work ranges across: discrete objects, performance, video, photography, installation, and web art; all at the nexus of conventional and new media. Intermedia, a term coined by Fluxus artist Dick Higgins, is my preferred descriptor. But far too often people read “intermediate” which is the cause of some confusion.

In my mind—and hopefully in the world—I am creating a body of work which is quietly, slowly adding layer upon layer with each piece, envisioning a complex of larger meaning, a story, a drawing, an experiential body; a Fantabiography—finding balance between lived life and imagined or fantasy life; forming clouds of artist slough and moments of clarity in the process.

List of recurring tropes: cultural questioning; sensual aesthetics; rabbits; formal structures; flight and airplanes; protective gear and gas masks; basic elements, fire, wood, water, soil; chalk; paint; movement; sound; seductively simple interactive code-art; the experiences of parenthood, marriage, and pro-feminist-egalitarian-privileged-aware-awake masculinity; and dimly lit rooms, drinks, riotous laughter and the joy of conversation.

As a designer, I love good design; things and forms that work performing to solve problems, be them visual or physical. As a designer, I love art that breaks things and creates problems, so we learn how to see, love and think.
